Do I need a referral to book?
No. You can book directly, the same as you would with any optometrist. If a GP, paediatrician, or another health professional has already referred you, bring that referral along and Dr Chea will factor it into the assessment.
What age is appropriate for an assessment?
There's no set age. Dr Chea sees children from their early years right through to adults, and treats whole families over time. If you're not sure whether it's the right time to bring your child in, get in touch and we can talk it through before you book.
How long is a new-patient appointment, and why 2 hours?
New patient appointments run for 2 hours. We take the time to properly understand what's going on.
Is this covered by Medicare or private health insurance?
It depends on the type of appointment and your own policy, so it's not something we can answer with a blanket yes or no. Contact us before you book and we'll confirm exactly what applies to your situation.
How is a behavioural assessment different from a standard eye test?
A standard eye test checks whether you can see clearly: can you read the letters on the chart. A behavioural assessment goes further. It looks at how your eyes and brain work together to track a line of text, hold focus, and process what they're seeing over time. That's what matters most for kids who see fine on a chart but still struggle with reading or schoolwork.
